I paid a little visit last week, when my weekly session was finished, to the Gygax Memorial that the developers at Turbine put into Dungeons and Dragons Online outside of the quest that Gary narrates. It's very nice and equally as nice, if you guys haven't seen it, is the tribute that took place to Gary on the Sarlona server the day he passed away. There are some nice videos of it up on youtube.
Carry on. |

I met Gary once, during a Salon of Games in Paris in the 1990's. I remember being very nervous, and him being accommodating, welcoming, and funny. Like an uncle you only see once in while. The guy who brings smiles by telling a few jokes and just being himself, you know.
Anyway. I like so many others exchanged many, many posts on messages boards with him after the advent of the almighty internet. Gary was a genuinely nice guy. The kind of guy you want to be friends with. That's the greatest compliment I can come up with.
And that's not talking about any RPG-related thing about him.
I mean. That's what I'm going to miss. The good friend you just talked to every once in a while. A good neighbor. The uncle of my RPG family. I'm already missing him a lot. |

I've just found this forum this morning, and never expected so many people to be so close to him, or even more that he was so close to them...
This saddens me even more...hope you found peace where you are, oh great wise man... |

We all remember you fondly, thank you for giving me so many worlds and wonder. How many eyes have you kept twinkling?
Heroes live on in legend. On this the anniversary of your death and on every session I run for my group you are warmly held in our thoughts. (They have no idea whats in store for themselves this weekend!) You gave each of us so much more than games. You let me into a world I was alienated from otherwise, and so much more.
To G.G.'s family: Our thoughts and prayers are always with you. You must be very lucky to have known him and hope you know he will be remembered by a vast many people for a very long time.
Mr. Gygax is very much a real life hero to me, and to a great many I am sure.
Guess I just wanted to say thanks again.
Take care,
-Jim H. |

Yes. Gary's a hero of mine. He was a friend also.
Miss you, Gary. I know you're running cool games for the guys up there. I'll keep warming up the dice til we meet again. |

Pen and paper RPGs have always meant a lot to me, they were what revealed to me the people who truly were my friends, were always there for me when i felt down, i don't know what could have cheered me up on a rainy day more then swinging a sword at a random encounter monster, it always brought a smile to my face.
I can be honest and say that without these games i probably wouldn't have many friends, it is these games that connect me and my friends.
When i first heard that the father of our hobby had moved on, i didn't know what to think, the feelings became seealed within me, it wasn't until last year that i truly understood what kind of genius we have lost.
It is rarely that i cry, but seeing how much people could care for someone they might not even have met, made tears stain my eyes, i never met Gary but here my tears now flow due to the sadness, knowing the person who gave my early years meaning, is gone.
Even though you may not be among us in this realm of mortals, i am sure you're memory will be immortalized in the minds of everyone who has found joy in d&d
Rest in peace and thanks for everything. |

Today there shall be a moment and pause, a time to remember. It has always been an honor. Thank you for all you gave, all you shared. May there be more. _________________ If it matters, leave a message at the beep.

Amen!
Last night's 1:00 a.m. showing of Futurama was the Anthology of Interest episode with Gary in it. Either by design or through cosmic coincidence, it was nice to see it on today's date.
Damn. I may have to game this weekend when I had planned not to. |
