Tragic, tragic news.

He was such a cool, no, great guy. We owe him a great deal.
I will never forget the first time he tried to tease me on a forum. It was just too neat to get to be friends with the man who made of favorite hobby.

Thanks Gary.
I bet your rolling natural 20's with the big Game Master now.

[Christian Scripture & Prayer Follow].

For me, this Scripture speak about some of the qualities Gary had:

"Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a human being, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross," (Philippians 2:6-8, TNIV).

Gary was the creator of our favorite hobby - a hobby that has shaped us in so many ways. He could have "lorded" over us all, but instead humbly put up with us gamers and treated us all like life-long friends.

Lord, we thank you for sharing with us the life of Gary Gygax.
Before he was ours, he is yours.
For that part of him that has touched our lives so deeply
and helped make us the people we are,
and for his life that in your love will never end, we give you thanks.
May your perpetual light and peace shine upon Gary for ever.
Comfort those of us who remain in this life
and draw us closer to one another.
We look forward to that day when we will, by your grace,
all be together in the house not made with hands, but eternal in heaven. Amen.

Thanks Gary. Crying or Very sad

Thanks for that, Coleston.

"Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends."

While Gary did not lay his literal life down for his friends, he used his life to give to his friends, us gamers.

If anyone finds out information about a funeral, I would like to make a pilgrimage to pay one last bit of homage to the man who changes my life.

I have just talked to Gail, Gary's wife, and she indicated that the funeral will be a private affair for the family and a few close friends.

I just want to say Thank you, Gary.

I can't imagine a world without role-playing games; and the advancements of other gaming brought on by it.

Thinking about getting out my red book and running something in his honor from back when Elf was a class.

I am sorry I'll never get to meet Gary in person. He was ever friendly and gracious even through the screen of a computer.

...But release me from my bands
With the help of your good hands.
Gentle breath of yours my sails
Must fill, or else my project fails,
Which was to please. Now I want
Spirits to enforce, art to enchant;
And my ending is despair
Unless I be relieved by prayer,
Which pierces so that it assaults
Mercy itself and frees all faults.
As you from crimes would pardoned be,
Let your indulgence set me free.

RIP Gary - and thank you for nearly 3 decades of adventure.

While I never met Gary personally, I was lucky enough to participate on the "Ask Gary" threads over on enworld.org - he was a pleasure to chat with.

I'm heartbroken.

I'm glad I was able to meet him, to share stories with him, to shake his hand, to game with him, but most of all I am glad I was introduced to books bearing his name, for they've changed my life, and many others.

I can't even begin to comprehend the enormity of this loss.

Godspeed, Gary. We miss you terribly.

Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the dead wood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

As an aside, don't be surprised if the forums are swamped - the blogosphere has linked to this thread for the news.

I'd like to send my condolences to Mr. Gygax's friends and family. His work put a huge stamp on my life. The one time I was privileged to meet him, he was friendly, funny, and fatherly. I'll miss his wit and humor on these forums.

Are there any charities he favored to which we can donate money in his memory?

I don't know what to say. I'm shaken to the core with this. Gary and I only talked through the boards but I found him a great guy to talk with. I keep wanting this not to be true, I want it to be a hoax.

Gary, the gaming world feels it's loss. But, I know where you are. I never met you in life but when my day comes I hope, after I go to the glory you have, I may find room at your gaming table.

God bless.

I got the news via telelphone this afternoon. I am so blessed to have met that sweet old man. I'm lucky that my husband introduced me to D&D and our children will be brought up gaming, too. We taught my folks to play a few years ago and just a few weeks ago, our 5 year old begged Daddy to play D&D with her for the very first time. We planned to bring her with us to Lake Geneva this summer to see where it all began. Sadly she will not now get a chance to meet the man himself.

My thoughts are with Gail right now and all of Gary's family and friends.

Good thought. We'll see what we can find out and keep everyone posted.

I had to take the time to get an account to just say how much he has touched not only my life immensely but so many others. Even though I had never met him, it always felt as though I knew him. He did so much for so many and for this and for the person he is may he forever know everlasting peace. All the best to his family and those who truly knew him, he will be missed.
