no. just no.
EDIT: I cannot say how crushed I am. I worked with Gary on a few projects but never had the chance to meet him in person. This is a dark day for the Gygax family and for the hobby.
With all his energy and power drawn up about him, the great Mordenkainen, Archmage of the Flanaess, stepped through the portal embarking on what would surely be his greatest adventure. _________________ H 75 P 55 S 16

Tragic, tragic news.
He was such a cool, no, great guy. We owe him a great deal.
I will never forget the first time he tried to tease me on a forum. It was just too neat to get to be friends with the man who made of favorite hobby.
Thanks Gary.
I bet your rolling natural 20's with the big Game Master now.
[Christian Scripture & Prayer Follow].
For me, this Scripture speak about some of the qualities Gary had:
"Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a human being, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross," (Philippians 2:6-8, TNIV).
Gary was the creator of our favorite hobby - a hobby that has shaped us in so many ways. He could have "lorded" over us all, but instead humbly put up with us gamers and treated us all like life-long friends.
Lord, we thank you for sharing with us the life of Gary Gygax.
Before he was ours, he is yours.
For that part of him that has touched our lives so deeply
and helped make us the people we are,
and for his life that in your love will never end, we give you thanks.
May your perpetual light and peace shine upon Gary for ever.
Comfort those of us who remain in this life
and draw us closer to one another.
We look forward to that day when we will, by your grace,
all be together in the house not made with hands, but eternal in heaven. Amen.
Thanks Gary. _________________

I lament the fact that although I've been able to correspond with Gary, I never had the pleasure of meeting him. Even though he barely knew me, he was so helpful and encouraging.
God Speed, Gary. You will be missed. |

Why?
This is very sad news. Gary will be sorely missed.
Our prayers go out to his family and friends.
May his campaigns and quests in the afterlife always meet with favor. _________________ Lord Aladar

Sad news indeed.
Often imitated, but never equaled. It's hard to gauge the impact his work has had on many of us in a personal sense, and in the greater picture, it's even harder to estimate the impact his works have had on not only gaming, but American, North American, and world wide cultures.
Rest in Peace Gary, you are missed.

This is terribly sad news. My condolences to the family and close friends of the creator of our hobby. I hope that he can continue to live his dreams whereever he is now. I know I'm not the only one whose life would look a lot different now if it hadn't been for him. His work will be treasured for a long time to come. |

Somethings will stay with you forever. Meeting Gary at last years LGGC is one of those seminal moments of my life. Gary was a big part of my formative years, as he was with a lot of us, and he never even realized it. Even as everyone told him, I think he didn't really understand.
Gary was such a nice guy. I wrote an email to him once, sure it was a hoax address and I would never hear from him. He wrote me back with a day and told me how nice it was to hear from friends. We sent a few emails back and forth, and he was always so cool about it. Later, when we met at his house prior to LGGC, he was warm and inviting. I remember drinking a beer on his porch and listening to him talk about the old TSR days and how surreal it was. When I left, I shook his hand and told him thanks for having me over, and he thanked me for coming by. Later, at the con, he welcomed all autograph seekers with such happiness.
He was a great man.
We'll miss you Gary. RIP my friend.

No words suffice... My condolences to his family and wide wide circle of friends. We've lost a luminary today. (GM's day of all days to boot.)
“The Road goes ever on and on down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, and I must follow, if I can, pursuing it with eager feet, until it joins some larger way where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say.”

Of Gary I can say this. Im going to miss the old codger. We didn't always agree, but we got along well. He respected my talents and let me play in his world. Cant ask much more than that. _________________ "We'll go out through the kitchen!" Tanis Half-Elven

Thank you Gary for creating the game that allowed me to escape from the real world, every now and again, in the company of good friends. AD&D opened my eyes to the joy of RPGs and the worlds of Tolkien, Lieber, Howard, and other fantasy luminaries (yourself included).
What a terrible shock... |

The creator of my favorite hobby and cartoon is now gone. I consider it my great fortune to have met and spent time with Gary. We are truly blessed to have been on this earth at the same time as he. While Alexander the Great and Henry V belong to the past, we have shared this earth with a man who conquered more kingdoms than all of them. There will always be a place at the role playing table in my heart for Gary Gygax.

I am new to these forums, but following a link from ENWorld has led me here and I too would like to pass on my heart felt sympathy.
Gary, and his invention of AD&D, were instrumental in changing my life. He unlocked a world of creativity, in me and many others, and in a twisted way, the introduction of fantasy grounded me in reality.
I was devastated that WOTC took away his enduring legacy of a printed magazine and in partial honor of him, that is why I had created Dragon Roots Magazine. I guess I didn't think much of that at the time, but he is a great part of why I made the magazine.
I had e-mailed him for a review of issue zero and didn't get a reply, now I know why. I am deeply saddened by his passing.
If anyone finds out information about a funeral, I would like to make a pilgrimage to pay one last bit of homage to the man who changes my life.
Rest now brave adventurer and may flights of dragon sing thee to thy rest. |
